Assignment 1: Your limiting beliefs

So we're nearly at the end of the first module of The Fractional Executive Launchpad.

I want to talk a little bit now about the biggest obstacle standing between you in your corporate career and a successful transition to being a fractional executive.

I can talk about this with confidence because I spent a couple of years before I actually took the leap worrying about whether I could actually make it as a fractional executive.

So let me emphasise this again.

The single biggest obstacle standing between you and a successful transition to being a fractional isn't your expertise in a particular industry, your leadership experience, your understanding of the work you do or any technical skills.

No, the biggest hurdle that I know exists for someone like you taking this leap are your limiting beliefs about your value, your money and selling your services as a fractional executive.

That's why the assignment for this module is about understanding the beliefs that you have that might be limiting you taking the leap to be a fractional executive.

Once you've done that you can work through those beliefs and reframe them to allow you to succeed on your journey to become a successful fractional exec.

That’s why this section focuses on identifying and dismantling your limiting beliefs.

So here’s your first exercise…

I want you to set aside 15-20 minutes to write down all the limiting thoughts that are holding you back from taking the leap to go fractional.

Get them out exactly as they appear in your head. When I did this I had things like:

  • How will I generate reliable income to be able to pay the bills at home?
  • I'm not great at sales. How will I be able to sell my services?
  • I enjoy working with a team so I'm not sure I'll be able to work independently.
  • I'm not confident enough to do this. It feels too risky?

Whatever doubts or fears that little voice in your head is telling you, I want you to write them down.

With these thoughts on paper in front of you, you can see them objectively.

Now we're going to reframe each limiting belief.

For each thing you've put down, trying writing a positive and empowering reframe.

Here are a few examples:

“I don’t have the perfect niche yet so I can’t resign and get started.” → “There's no perfect niche. I can start now my niche is good enough, learn as I go and refine my focus over time.”

“I haven't got enough experience outside my current corporate role.” → “My corporate experience is a strong foundation. I can leverage it enough for now and develop any new skills I need as I go along.”

“I don't know I can attract enough clients as a fractional executive.” → “Plenty of people have successfully made this transition before me. With focus, effort and using what I'll learn on this course, I can do it too.”

Remember, the real progress begins with recognising your own limiting beliefs, and consciously reframing them.

No amount of knowledge or planning will make a difference if you don’t get the mental blocks out of the way first.

So what are you waiting for?

It's time to get on spotting and reframing those beliefs.
